Sugar is the generalised name for a class of chemically-related sweet-flavored substances, most of which are used as food. They are carbohydrates, composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. There are various types of sugar derived from different sources. Simple sugars are called monosaccharides and include glucose, fructose and galactose.

Sugars are found in the tissues of most plants but are only present in sufficient concentrations for efficient extraction in sugarcane and sugar beet. Sugarcane is a giant grass and has been cultivated in tropical climates in the Far East since ancient times. A great expansion in its production took place in the 18th century including to West Africa.

ITL is involved in the sugar business both upstream and downstream. ITL is currently developing a large sugar farm in Nigeria with a land area of 26,000 hectares, a cane mill with a capacity of 110 MT per hour and a sugar refinery. Once fully rehabilitated, the entire facility will be able to produce sugar from the cane seed to the breakfast table.

ITL is also trading sugar, by supplying the Nigerian market with imported sugar for the onward sale and distribution. Clients include major confectionary and beverage companies.
